Overview:
"Working as an APRN in the Cardiac ICU provides daily opportunities for critical thinking, learning and growth. We manage children with complex congenital heart conditions, including congenital heart disease, arrhythmias and heart failure. The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that I was an integral part of the care team that led a critically ill child to recovery. After working at Children's Mercy Kansas City for 11 years, I am most proud of the multidisciplinary teamwork that contributes to providing quality care to our patients and families." - Liz Winke, APRN

The Ward Family Heart Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is the premier high-volume pediatric heart program in the Midwest. Our focused, interdisciplinary care of children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease brings to bear the expertise of board-certified pediatric cardiologists, congenital cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac intensivists, anesthesiologists, and advanced practice pediatric critical care nurses. Our facilities include a new state of the art Cardiac Intensive Care unit in 2021 and the most advanced technology available for diagnosis, treatment, and translational research for our patients, who range in age from fetal to young adult.
As a member of the Heart Center team the Cardiac ICU (CICU) APNs will work to provide 24/7 coverage to all high acuity cardiac patients in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit. This includes, but is not limited to, single ventricle patients, transplant patients, patients requiring mechanical circulatory support and ventricular assist devices, post-operative patients, acquired heart disease and post- cardiac catheterization patients. In this team structure CICU APNs provide direct patient management which includes participation in patient rounds, ordering/interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, analyzing and prioritizing complex data, developing differential diagnoses, and implementing plans of care. These tasks will be completed with direct collaboration with a board-certified pediatric intensivist. The CICU APN is expected to work effectively with the medical team by communicating clearly with families, working well with physicians and physician trainees, being a resource to nursing staff and collaborating with multiple subspecialities that function in the Cardiac ICU. Additionally, the CICU APNs collaborate with the CV surgeons on post-operative care, including but not limited to incisional management, removal of chest tubes and pacer wires, and wound vac therapy. We are looking for candidates who have a passion for the fast-paced environment of the cardiac intensive care unit and an enthusiasm to grow their advanced practice career caring for the pediatric cardiac population.
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. The newer APN participates in beginning leadership, evidenced-based practice/ research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an experienced APN mentor and through the APN fellowship program.
